The C&H Nutrition range of alternative performance enhancers includes a unique, natural plant-derived additive and access to a range of protected organic acid combinations, some including essential oils. Based on the natural plant alkaloids sanguinarine and chelerythrine, Sangrovit is a proven highly effective digestive enhancer for pig, poultry and ruminant diets, offering the opportunity to boost feed intake and conversion efficiency. Trials show it to be highly effective in increasing feed value. The primary action of Sangrovit centres on its ability to protect essential amino acids such as tryptophan from enzymatic breakdown in the gut. This means more amino acids are available to the animal, improving protein availability and carcass quality. Additional benefits include a positive effect on the formation of bile to improve effectiveness of fat degrading enzymes, increased gut motility and improved liver function due to a reduction in the toxic by-products of amino acid decarboxylation. Sangrovit is an easy to handle, dust free, micro-granular product with a pleasant aroma. Pelleting, extrusion and expansion have no negative effect on its stability. C&H Nutrition is also the sole GB distributor for the range of non-antibiotic, functional animal feed ingredients from Soda Feed Ingredients. The company’s unique encapsulation techniques improve digestion efficiency by allowing targeted nutrient release all the way down ruminant and monogastric digestive tracts. All products are also available in Ireland through C&H sister company Brown and Gillmer Limited based in Co. Cork. Pig and poultry producers can take advantage of the wealth of benefits provided by Betafin®, a pure form of natural betaine. To achieve lower feed costs, Betafin allows the producer to reformulate the diet by removing all added choline chloride and some added methionine from the feed. Dietary energy levels can also be reduced without any detriment to animal performance. Betafin stimulates lean meat deposition by helping the animal to maintain its water balance more efficiently. More metabolic energy is available to the animal to fuel lean growth, resulting in increased breast meat or carcass yield. Trials have highlighted betaine’s ability to improve the structural integrity of the animal’s intestine, increasing gut tensile strength and absorptive area for efficient absorption of nutrients, thereby helping to enhance growth rate, feed conversion and profitability. Web: www.danisco.com/animalnutritionLoders Croklaan BV LODERS CROKLAAN B.V., an international feed ingredients supplier, offers a range of products which enhance the performance of the animal. LodeStar™ C8-10 is a medium-chain fatty acid product of vegetable origin, which has shown in both R&D and practical environments, to significantly boost the performance, overall health situation, and uniformity of pigs, poultry and ruminants. Especially young animals seem to benefit most from a combination of an energy boost effect (deriving from the fast absorption of the fatty acids) and the antimicrobial properties of the product. LodeStar™ CLA is a product consisting of conjugated linoleic acids deriving from vegetable oils, which has been well described in literature over the past years. It has been shown in both humans and animals that the product can boost the immune system, but also has a number of other beneficial effects have been described. Examples are improved zootechnical results, alteration of the body fat and muscle ratio of the body, improved carcass and meat quality, and desirable effects on overall milk production and milk fat levels. LodeStar™ VFE is a vegetable fat extract with exceptional neutraceutical properties. Nutritionally it can be compared with soy bean oil, whereas in the cosmetics and medical industry it is being used because of its anti-inflammatory and skin-healing properties. Loders Croklaan has shown the product also has these effects on the intestinal environment of animals. Fecinor is living bacteria that is used with the intention of establishing a desirable environment for beneficial microflora to compete with deleterious bacteria within the small and large intestine. Through competitive inhibition and modification of intestinal pH, Fecinor improves the development of desirable health promoting microorganisms that improve weight gain and feed efficiency. To be effective, the microorganisms should be established as normal inhabitants of the intestinal tract of health animals and they must be acid and bile-tolerant to survive passage through the stomach to become established in the small intestine. Probiotics have been used for more than 45 years; their therapeutic and nutritional value is still quite variable. Some of the possible reasons for the variability of results are poor viability of microbial cultures in the feed or in storage; strain differences of probiotic cultures; dose level and frequency of feeding the culture; drug and feed ingredient interactions, which can neutralize viable probiotic colonies and composition of the diet (e.g. lactose in diet favours colonization by certain probiotics). This agility in proliferation along with the capacity to fix it at the same epithelial receptors (loci) that pathogenic microorganisms need, promotes the presence of an intestinal protective barrier. This barrier improves the absorption capacity and enzyme production. The high production of lactic acid produced by Fecinor reduces the pH at intestinal level mainly in the farthest intestinal portions when pathogenic proliferation can originate; besides this the intestinal acid pH assists the proliferation of lactic bacteria. Enteroccocus faecium requires important quantities of nutrients for growth; this reduces the availability of easily fermentable nutrients needed for survival by the pathogens. The high multiplication rate, barrier effect and lactic acid production are the most important mechanisms used by Fecinor to improve the intestinal comfort and act as competitive exclusion. Lactic acid production reduces the pH and promotes the secretion of endogenous enzymes e.g. the transformation of pepsinogen to pepsin, improving protein digestibility. The lactic acid bacteria are also directly related to the secretion of pancreatic enzymes and are related to the energy metabolism of the intestinal flora; with reduced digestibility of the starch then there will be an increase of starch at caecal level, which is used by the pathogenic microorganisms. When the starch level in the substrate is reduced the lactic bacteria acid are able to use other carbohydrates as an energy source (e.g. oligosaccharides) that the pathogenic populations do not metabolize. One consequence of banning the antibiotic like growth promoters will be the increased use of medicated feeds and/or treatments. This will cause the elimination of an important part of the intestinal flora that will need rapid restoration. The clear benefits of E. faecium Fecinor on the intestinal health in pigs and broilers can be assured by the fact that it has obtained definitive registry in the EU. These results indicated that Fecinor is the way to improve the intestinal health in young animal. Young animal like piglets or broilers have a very fast intestinal transit, so they need probiotics that act swiftly against pathogens presented in the small intestine. Fecinor is presented in different concentrations and
appearances. All trial data and references are available on request from Norel and Nature Nutrition. To use such compounds effectively, plants have developed physiological mechanisms that balance inhibitory concentrations and modes of action to minimise selection pressures for resistance. In this way the efficacy of this selection of active elements is maintained. It has been suggested that these compounds may offer alternatives to chemical and antibiotic antimicrobials in the field of animal nutrition where substitutes for the chemical growth promoters are required. Nor-Feed A/S has developed a botanical product - Cabanin CS Powder - in which this balance is utilized. It is based on a unique synergistic combination of elements from citrus-fruits, chestnut and grape whose efficacy has been confirmed by trials in six European countries, in feeds for pigs at different stages of production. The trial results have confirmed that effects on average daily gain (ADG) and feed conversion (FCR) are such that Cabanin offers a commercially viable alternative to antibiotic growth promoting agents. Results from one of the trials are shown below.

XTRACT Dairy is the first product to be featured. It will be followed by XTract for Calves, for Pigs and for Poultry. XTract products contain specially selected micro-encapsulated active substances naturally occurring in aromatic plants and spices. They all have proven effects in animal nutrition programmes. Two main reasons are given for the growing interest in this form of product. Firstly it is due to nutritionists seeking solutions because of the impending removal of antibiotic growth promoters. Secondly because more and more independent data confirms their efficacy and economic worth in a wide range of feeding systems. According to François Gautier, Director of Pancosma Bioactive division, the impetus to create a stand-alone XTract site came from an increasing awareness by the livestock producer of the potential commercial benefits of the XTract products. The approach therefore has been to present the information in a style which demonstrates to the farmer how he can use XTract in his feeding programme and the extra production he can expect. Already XTract is the choice of several of the largest integrated broiler producers globally. Should more background scientific data be of interest there is a link to the main Pancosma site (www.pancosma.com) and to another site, www.plant.xt.com, which will come on stream early in 2006. François Gautier also confirms that the demand for XTract is just as great outside the EU as inside – a clear demonstration, he says, of the nutritional value of such a plant extract based product.
