THREE STEPS TO CLEANER FEED

Salmonella, Campylobacter and Listeria, the main pathogens causing human health problems, have been found in livestock feed. In 2008 the European Food Safety Authority Panel on Biological Hazards stated: ‘feed is a major vector for the transmission of Salmonella to animals consuming feed and food products derived from the animals’.

Though widely used by feed manufacturers, heat treatment is expensive, has a high ‘carbon footprint’ and may not kill all pathogens. Contamination will therefore occur unless additional measures are implemented.

The Anitox Termin-8® Pathogen Control Program for finished feed and raw materials guarantees freedom from pathogens and prevents recontamination during handling, storage and transportation. The United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) approved a label claim that it does so for up to 21 days.

The Program is a comprehensive solution that guarantees trouble-free results. Focused on Termin-8, a world-class bactericide which prevents Salmonella contamination, it includes situation analysis, mill inspection, regular feed sampling, laboratory analysis, application equipment and installation. It also includes regulatory management assistance and routine visits by service engineers to ensure that systems deliver optimum results. Feed hygiene is dramatically improved, resulting in safer, cleaner feed.

Because Termin-8 works only in the feed it has no residual effect in the gastrointestinal tract, leaves no residue in tissue, eggs or milk and has no withdrawal time.

Anitox (www.anitox.com) is a global leader in bio-security technology and customized milling efficiency solutions for the animal feed industry. For further information please call +44 (0)1604 811228 or email maria.walker@anitox.co.uk

C&H NUTRITION

Feed acidification can have a beneficial effect on the salmonella status of finishing pigs and poultry. Numerous trials with organic acids show that including these products in animal diets can be an additional feed safety insurance policy.

C&H Nutrition is now marketing the Soda Feed Ingredients’ encapsulated organic acid and essential oil products FormaXol, RepaXol and AciXol in the UK.

FormaXol is an encapsulated source of formic and citric acid combined with RepaXol – an encapsulated blend of essential oils, specifically cinnamon, oregano, thyme, capsicum and citrus extracts. As a result, FormaXol has a wider spectrum of activity due to the synergy between the acids and essential oils. The acids are released in a controlled way in feed and along the digestive tract, primarily in the small intestine. As a result, the acid acts beneficially to promote healthy gut function and this cleanses undesirable organisms, such as salmonella spp, that may be present in the monogastric gut.

AciXol combines a select blend of organic acids with RepaXol. Unlike products made from free acids, AciXol does not affect the cells of the stomach and works without lowering the normal secretion of hydrochloric acid. AciXol releases its acids from the protective fat matrix slowly and progressively under the action of lipase and bile salts, predominantly in the small intestine.

These encapsulated acid and essential oil solutions are also available in Ireland through C&H sister company Brown and Gillmer Limited based in Co. Cork.
