Above: Reflex H top pan balances are available in a range of designs with a choice of accessories to suit the working environment. Avery Weigh-Tronix has launched Reflex H, a comprehensive range of balances with the extensive features and consistent accuracy demanded in high-precision weighing applications. The balances are designed for weighing routines both in and out of the laboratory environment with programmes for counting, checkweighing, density measurement, solids and liquids and peak hold included at no extra cost. This suits applications in R&D, QC, food, chemical, pharmaceutical and engineering industries. Central to each balance is proven force motor weighing technology, to guarantee sustained accuracy and fast results under all conditions. Reflex H includes a unique Windows® Direct feature that enables data to be sent straight from the balance to a PC, with no software installation required. This allows routine data collection to be automated and the results analysed with standard desktop tools including MSExcel®, MSAccess® and Lotus 1-2-3. Automatic data capture leaves operators free to concentrate on technical procedures, reducing manual record keeping and helping to eliminate input errors. The range also includes an internal clock which can be set to download data at set time intervals in tests and experiments. An auto calibration facility is supplied on all models with an internal calibration weight. This simple-to-use feature encourages regular calibration and thereby ensures accurate results, every time. It can also be set to automatically adjust the balance for small changes in ambient temperature or to calibrate at a time that best suits work schedules. Calibration data including the date, time, serial and model number of the balance can be output to a PC or printer, to provide evidence of due diligence for audit and traceability purposes and compliance with ISO, GLP and GMP standards. Reflex H has a robust, high quality construction for reduced downtime and maintenance demands. A variety of easy-clean features including wipeable surfaces and detachable doors and door rails on analytical models ensure the balances’ complete reliability. An extensive range of user-friendly features includes a large and clear backlit display and tactile key panel to provide operator feedback. The menu lock function allows favourite features or operating conditions to be pre-selected and PIN protection prevents unauthorised use or accidental changes to the configuration. The NIRFlex N-500 is a Polarization Interferometer, FT-NIR System with the optical performance expected for research grade spectrometers and the stability and dependability expected for routine lab and process applications. The flexibility of the new NIRFlex N-500 allows the user to easily switch between several sampling modules designed for a variety of sample types. Analyses of solids, liquids, or slurries of food, dairy and agricultural products are easily carried out allowing simple and rapid determination of key components. Additionally, a broad range of “pre-calibrations” is available for a variety of food and feed material types allowing virtually immediate implementation of the system. In addition to these Buchi pre-calibrated applications a great number of INGOT® calibrations for feed and feed ingredients offer nearly unlimited applications in that area. INGOT calibrations are developed by Central Laboratories, UK, and the Walloon Agricultural Research Centre of Gembloux, Belgium. They are based on a very broad basis of spectral data and represent an enormous experience in NIR calibration development. The NIRWare and NIRCal Software for use with the NIRFlex N500 for Food and Feed food applications includes an array of chemometric analysis tools designed to provide System users power and flexibility, while providing easy to learn interfaces for the end-users. The Eclipse Scientific Group has a major UK presence in the laboratory testing of animal feeds and pet foods, covering areas such as: • compositional analysis (nutritional values) The services are based at Chatteris, Cambridgeshire, where Aspland & James Limited built up a reputation as the foremost laboratory in this area of testing. The business became part of the Eclipse group in 1998, the same year as did Dr Augustus Voelcker and Sons Limited of London, who had been a Referee Analyst to the Grain and Feed Trade Association (GAFTA) for over 20 years. The traditions and experience of both firms were retained and expanded within the Group. An extensive range of both chemical and microbiological tests is available. These cover the requirements of the UK Feedingstuffs Regulations for labelling purposes – many of the tests are UKAS accredited (Testing No 1282). Eclipse is represented on industry committees such as the AIC Analysts Committee and the RSC Animal Feeding Stuffs Sub-Committee. It can be used on both ground and unground samples, semi-solids and can measure parameters like protein, fat, moisture and fibre in under a minute and, no chemicals are required. The InfraXact is robust and easy to use, requiring minimal operator training and instrument maintenance making routine NIR analysis simple, convenient and cost-effective. It can be situated in the laboratory with InfraXact Lab, or at the production line with the InfraXact Pro, where it is IP65 approved. Ready to use calibrations ensure that operation is simple, effective and that InfraXact starts working from day one. An optional programmable sample ID chip in the sample cup ensures that samples are automatically traced and that the right calibration is selected. Results can also be transferred back to the LIMS software in real time. Such features make it simple to do more routine analysis with associated benefits, including more consistent product quality, reduced risk of rework and improved throughput in the laboratory. The InfraXact is the latest addition in NIRS family from FOSS; the NIRS 5000 and 6500 are also available. FOSS provides dedicated analytical solutions that ensure optimal production of feed, food and agricultural products – helping you optimize both quality and profit. The Soxtherm is available as a 2, 4 or 6 place unit to suit all laboratories. Up to four extraction units can be operated from a single controller. Large or small beakers may be used depending upon sample type to optimise solvent usage. Extracted fat can be weighed for total fat determination, or can be titrated for free fatty acids. For total fat, the new Soxtherm can be coupled with the Gerhardt Acid Hydrolysis Unit. Once installed, the equipment does not require an annual service therefore reducing running costs to the user. Hydronix sensors with their unique digital, microwave technology offer an accurate and practical solution to this problem. Robust and easy to integrate into the main control system, the sensors are placed in the flow of material, in silos, the mixer, pelletiser or belt cooler depending upon the individual requirement. Interfacing software, also used for easy setup and calibration of the sensors, provides a real time method of monitoring the moisture content, enabling adjustments to be made in the process as necessary. The Hydro-Probe II sensor for flowing materials, or the Hydro-Mix VI sensor for mixers and walls of chutes / containers provide a reliable, cost effective method of quality control that reduces wastage and the associated costs of production. To meet both nutritional and quality control parameters, manufacturers within the animal feed industry require a fast and accurate way of measuring the fat content of their products. However, many of the methods used in routine testing today are either very time consuming, rely on the use of hazardous solvents and depend on skilled and experienced laboratory personnel or are difficult to calibrate.
Low resolution NMR is an alternative to these traditional methods and offers the following advantages:
The MARAN Ultra from Resonance Instruments provides users with a compact, benchtop instrument for determining fat content in animal feeds. The PC-based operation of the system gives a robust performance with stable, repeatable results. Running costs are very low as complex maintenance is not required and no consumables are used. The package is completed by a comprehensive and easy to use Windows-based software suite.
